Softball Falls vs. Iowa State

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – In its final game of the Santa Clara Marriott Bronco Classic, Santa Clara softball fell to Iowa State by a final of 3-0. The loss puts the Broncos at 0-8 on the season while the Cyclones are 11-2.

Santa Clara returns to the field Fri., Feb. 28 at 3:30 p.m. vs. Boston in the Santa Clara Marriott Invitational.

Ciara Gonzales (0-2) made the start for Santa Clara and got a loss in 5.1 innings. Gonzales allowed three runs on six hits. Kelly Scribner was 1-2 with a walk to lead the offense. Jenna Krummen was 1-1 with a double while Stephanie Fisher was 1-3.

Katie Johnson (10-2) started for Iowa State was got a win in the complete game shutout. Johnson allowed six hits and one walk with five strikeouts. Aly Cappaert was 3-4 with two doubles and two runs scored to lead the offense. Lexi Slater was 2-3 with tow doubles, a run scored and a RBI while Sara Rice was 1-2 with a RBI.

The Cyclones threatened in the top of the first when Sarah Hawryluk was hit by a pitch with one down but was caught stealing for the second out of the inning. Sara Davison walked and Cappaert doubled down the right field line but Hartman popped out to first to end the threat.

Scribner led off the bottom of the second with a walk and was lifted for pinch-runner Taylor Bojorquez who advanced to second on a wild pitch. Bojorquez moved up to third on a ground out and Chiara Biagini reached on a wild pitch on a third strike to put runners on the corners. Geenamaria Bonilla tried to bunt for a hit but Bojorquez was caught at home plate. The runners moved up to second and third on the play but Amanda Delfino went down swinging to end the inning.

Cappaert roped a double to the right center field gap to start things in the fourth and moved up to third on a bunt by Rachel Hartman. Slater broke the scoreless tie with a double to right center of her own. Gonzales came back with a pair of groundouts to get out of the inning with the score 2-0.

With one out in the bottom of the fourth Scribner scalded a single to center. Jordan Newell followed with a single to the shortstop but Biagini hit a liner to third that turned into a double play.

Cappaert started the sixth with a dribbler to first for a single and with one out Slater double to center. Brianna Rios came in to pitch for the Broncos and Spendlove floated an RBI single to center. Rice singled up the middle to make the score 3-0.

Krummen doubled past the diving third baseman to start things in the bottom of the seventh. Breezy Bernard followed with a single to right to put runners on the corners with no one out. After a strikeout Gianetta France pinch-hit and hit an infield single that loaded the bases and put the tying run on first. Cassandra Padilla went down swinging for the second out and Rochelle Rivera grounded out to third to end the game.

Game Notes: First pitch was 9:40 … Time of game was 1:44. … With the loss, the designated home team moved to 0-6 on the weekend. … In the top of the seventh Breezy Bernard came in to catch, Ashley Haney came in to play second base, and Jenna Krummen came in to play third base.
