Volleyball Sweeps San Francisco on Senior Night

SANTA CLARA, Calif.Julia Sangiacomo had 17 kills and Sophia Tulino added 14 to help Santa Clara volleyball outlast San Francisco 26-24, 25-21, 25-21 on Thursday in a West Coast Conference contest.

McKenna Marshall posted 15 kills and Orsula Staka chipped in seven on a .538 attack percentage for the Dons (7-10, 7-10) who were held to a .159 attack percentage in the sweep.

The Broncos (5-8, 5-8), who have won four of their last five at home, posted a .228 attack percentage, including a .257 mark in the final set.

Santa Clara scored the first five points in the third set, two on kills from Sangiacomo, and pulled ahead 19-10 on a San Francisco attack error. However, three kills from Marshall chopped the deficit to 20-16. But the Dons were only able to trade points with the Broncos the rest of the way, and Sangiacomo closed out the match on a kill.

The opening set featured five lead changes and 11 ties, the final one coming at 24-all after the Dons staved off two set points. But Tulino produced a kill and service ace to close it out.

The Broncos pulled away in the second set by scoring five of six, four on USF errors, to build a 20-14 edge. Two kills in a row from McKenna cut the deficit to 22-20, forcing a Santa Clara timeout. But once again Tulino followed with a kill and service ace, and then a USF attack error ended the set.

Neither team served well with the Dons committing 14 service errors and the Broncos had 12 though they did produce six aces.

Aylen Ayub had 27 assists and 11 digs for the Dons.

Gretchen Reinert, the lone active Santa Clara senior, was recognized postgame with a video tribute by her teammates. She produced 10 digs in the match.

NOTES
• Santa Clara leads the all-time series 69-16, though the Dons came in having won three of the last four. The Broncos won both meetings in 2019, but teams have split the last 10 meetings.
