Women's Water Polo Splits First Two Games of Season

Jan. 26, 2002

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team opened up its 2002 season with two games at San Jose State Saturday. The Broncos split the two games, defeating UC Santa Cruz by a score of 12-11 before falling to No. 5 San Jose State 18-1.

In the first game the Broncos played well against the fourth-ranked team in Division III, UC Santa Cruz, holding on for the narrow one goal victory. Katy Shumm scored a game-high four goals in the victory, while Amanda Ginn added two. Anne Ginnoti registered seven blocks between the pipes for the Broncos.

The afternoon proved to be a little different for the Broncos as they played the host and fifth-ranked San Jose State at 12:30. The Spartans took control early and never looked back, defeating the Broncos by 17 goals. Elizabeth Glotzbach notched the only goal for the Broncos in the defeat.

"I am pretty excited about how we started this season," said head coach Steve Hanson. "We have never played well against UC Santa Cruz and to come away with a win today in our first game is very encouraging."

Santa Clara moves to 1-1 on the season and will face Cal State Hayward Friday, February 1, at 2 p.m. in Hayward, Calif.
