Women's Water Polo Wins Two at Home

March 23, 2002

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team defeated Sonoma State and Pomona-Pitzer earlier today at the Leavey Pool. The Broncos topped the Cossacks 17-6 and the Hens 9-5 in the non-conference doubleheader to improve to 18-10 on the season.

Against Sonoma State, the Broncos opened a 10-3 halftime lead, and then went on a 5-0 run in the third quarter before closing out the contest.

Every Bronco that saw action in the Sonoma State victory scored a goal for SCU. The team was led by Carly Carpenter and Kelley Mays, who each recorded three scores. Amanda Ginn, Elizabeth Glotzbach and Kristin Goltz added two each while Sara Schmitt, Becky Hong, Alison Stover, Katy Shumm and Keri Rauenbuehler posted one goal apiece.

"It was a fantastic effort by everybody," head coach Steve Hanson said. "We handled them convincingly. Anne especially did a great job in the cage and in distributing the ball."

Against Pomona-Pitzer, Hong and Mays posted three scores each, while Glotzbach recorded two goals and Schmitt added the final tally.

"It was a great defensive game," Hanson continued. "We nabbed 16 steals to offset our own six turnovers and our man-down defense really did well. We held Pomona to two goals in the second half and were able to apply our transition game for a nice 2-0 weekend."
