Women's Water Polo Defeats CS Bakersfield 9-8

April 26, 2002

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team defeated CS Bakersfield by a 9-8 score this afternoon in the opening game of the Women's Western Water Polo Association Championships, hosted by UC Santa Cruz at the East Field House.

Down 8-7 heading into the final period, the Broncos scored two goals for their first win over the Roadrunners in four tries this season.

"We knew what we had to do and we accomplished it," Bronco head coach Steve Hanson said.

The Broncos, the tournament's fifth seed, improve to 21-13 on the season, and will face the winner of tonight's LMU-Chapman contest at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The Lions are the tournament's top seed.

The victory also secured the Broncos' highest finish in the Championship, as the team will finish no lower than fourth this weekend, topping last season's fifth-place result. Santa Clara competed on the Division III level its first two varsity seasons.

Kelley Mays led the Broncos with three goals, followed by Elizabeth Glotzbach with two. Becky Hong, Alison Stover, Katy Shumm and Carly Carpenter added one tally each. In goal, Anne Ginotti posted five blocks and four steals, shutting out CS Bakersfield in the fourth quarter. Carpenter was also strong defensively, added five steals.

Additionally, the Broncos remain undefeated when scoring at least nine goals. Although the seasons series favors the Roadrunners 3-1, Santa Clara kept the matches close all season long, losing, the first two matches by one-point margins, while the third contest favored the Roadrunners by only two goals.
