Women's Water Polo Tops Purdue at UC Davis Shootout

March 10, 2002

DAVIS, Calif. - Junior Kelley Mays scored six goals to lead the Santa Clara University women's water polo team in an 11-6 victory over collegiate club, fifth-ranked Purdue to open second-day action at the 22nd annual UC Davis Shootout this morning at Hickey Pool. The then took a 7-2 loss against Division I, 19th-ranked Cal Baptist. The team closed out weekend with a 7-5 loss to CS Bakersfield.

The split moved the Broncos to 12-9 on the season. Santa Clara returns home on Tuesday, March 12, to host Wagner at the Leavey Pool.

With the Broncos ahead 7-6 entering the fourth quarter, Mays outscored Purdue 4-0 in the final period to seal the victory. Junior Becky Hong added two goals against the Boilermakers, while freshmen Katy Shumm and Alison Stover, as well as junior Elizabeth Glotzbach, recorded one goal apiece.

Sophomore Anne Ginotti posted two blocks in the cage.

"We were kind of lethargic in the first half," head coach Steve Hanson said. "Or consistency and counter attack played into the game a little more in the second half and that allowed Kelley to establish herself at two meters. We did a good job getting the ball into her and she did a great job holding position. She was just on fire. Our defense also stepped up and was amazing to close out the game."

Against the Lancers, SCU was outscored 4-0 in the first quarter, watching that lead hold through halftime. In the third period, Cal Baptist increased its lead to 6-0 before Glotzbach put the Broncos on the scoreboard in the fourth. Hong scored in the final minute for Santa Clara's second score. Ginotti had seven saves in the contest.

Mays led the Broncos against CS Bakersfield with three goals, while Hong and Shumm added the final scores. Ginotti added 11 blocks.

Tied at three heading into the final period, Hanson said the Broncos faltered down the stretch, letting some opportunities slip by. It marks the third loss to Roadrunners this season.
