Feb. 17, 2002

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Freshman Katy Shumm scored the game-winning goal in sudden-death overtime to lead the Santa Clara University women's water polo team to a 9-8 victory over Cal Poly to close out play at Slugfest Tournament this afternoon, hosted by UC Santa Cruz at the East Fieldhouse Pool.

After drawing to a 6-6 tie at regulation and 8-8 after two overtimes, Shumm's goal with 2:11 remaining capped a weekend that saw the Broncos go 4-0 for their first winning streak of the season. SCU is now carries 7-3 overall mark.

"We have gone into overtime with Cal Poly the last nine times we faced them, and we've now won the last two," head coach Steve Hanson said. "This match went wire-to-wire, but it's been par for the course, so the girls knew what to expect. It's nice to come out with a win. We're all very excited."

Junior Kelley Mays led the Broncos for the third straight game, scoring three goals. She finished with 13 on the weekend. Junior Becky Hong added three goals, while Shumm finished with two, both in the overtime periods. Senior Sara Schmitt rounded out the Broncos' scoring with one tally.

Sophomore Anne Ginotti recorded 11 blocks in goal, facing 27 shots overall.

The Broncos began the morning with a 13-4 victory over Washington. Mays registered three goals, while Hong, junior Elizabeth Glotzbach, and freshmen Amanda Ginn and Shumm recorded two scores each. Single tallies by junior Carly Carpenter and Schmitt rounded out the Broncos' offense.

Ginotti notched seven blocks in goal.

"We played another good game defensively," Hanson added. "We had a few breakdowns but overall, our defense has definitely dominated our opponents this weekend."

The Broncos continue the season on Friday, visiting Fresno State for a 4 p.m. match.
