SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team closed a five-match homestand with an 11-8 victory over CS San Bernardino this afternoon at the Leavey Pool. The victory improved the Broncos to 19-12 on the season.

Junior Becky Hong led Santa Clara with three goals, including the go-ahead score in the fourth quarter. Juniors Carly Carpenter, Elizabeth Glotzbach and Kelley Mays added two goals each while freshmen Allison Stover and Katy Shumm added one tally apiece. Five of the Broncos' 11 goals were scored on the power play.

"Our man-up situation was rolling today," Bronco head coach Steve Hanson said. "It's been a spot we've really tried to work on and it showed this afternoon. Some of our goals to day were also very unorthodox in the scheme of things, but I've been encouraging the girls to feel the game and let it come to them. Their decisions and scores reflected that."

Santa Clara struck first, but CS San Bernardino countered with two scores, the second coming with just under a minute remaining in the first period. The Coyotes only lead of the match only lasted 22 seconds, as Shumm registered a man-up goal to tie the game.

In the second frame, the Broncos went up on Hong's first goal of the afternoon. A defensive block by Stover on CSSB's man-up, followed by one of Bronco netminder Anne Ginotti's 12 saves of the game, gave SCU a chance to increase its lead. Hong set Mays in whole, who then quickly turned around for the score to make it a two-goal advantage.

Santa Clara made it 5-3 at the half when Glotzbach scored on the fast break, assisted by Carpenter. Each team scored twice in third, but San Bernardino pulled to within one at 7-6 early in the fourth with a strong shot by Sarah Henley that scored from seven meters. With just under five minutes remaining, the Broncos had three solid chances on their next possession, but Coyote goalie Amanda Wells was able to stop the first and the Broncos hit cross bar on the other two occasions. CSSB's Kami Wilson tied the game on the Coyotes' next possession.

With a 5-on-4 situation for the Broncos, Hong put the home squad up for good with a shot that skipped off the water and under Wells' left arm for an 8-7 advantage. The Broncos' next trip down the pool offered another man-up situation, and Carpenter took advantage, taking her time and finessing the ball into the cage.

Ginotti registered another solid save with under three minutes remaining to maintain the Bronco lead. Another skip shot by Hong gave SCU a three-goal edge. Kari Harberts tallied the final goal for San Bernardino while Mays' score provided the final.

Santa Clara continues regular-season action at UC Davis tomorrow evening at 5 p.m.
