April 24, 2008

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara (17-11, 13-6 WWPA) will head to Loyola Marymount for the WWPA Championships this weekend. The No. 5 seed Broncos will have the first game of the tournament as they face off against No. 12 seed Chapman at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, April 25. If they win that, Santa Clara will then take on No. 4 seed Cal State Bakersfield at 1:30 p.m. For a complete tournament schedule, click here.

Last Week

The Broncos won their only game of the week this past weekend at UC Santa Cruz 10-5. Amy Lamb notched her seventh hat trick of the year and Randahl Capurro blocked 11 shots while allowing just three goals in the game.

Notes

Milestone Watch
Amy Lamb's three goals last game launched her into the 40/40 club with 42 goals and 42 assists. With a good showing this weekend, Lamb has an outside shot at 50/50. Christie Miller added to her stat total and is now just one assist and one steal away from having 20 goals, 20 assists, 30 steals, and 30 kickouts in a season.

Going Through Bakersfield
Santa Clara has lost three one-goal games to Cal State Bakersfield this year, and will need to get past them in the second round if they want to advance in the WWPA Championships. The team wouldn't have it any other way than to go through them, and is looking forward to a chance at redemption. Said head coach Keith Wilbur, "It's fitting that we'll have to beat Bakersfield to move on."

Controlling the Ball
Over the 28 games the Broncos have played this year, they have turned the ball over just 23 times, an average of less than once per game! And as far as creating advantages go, the Broncos have drawn 173 kickouts this year as opposed to the 132 surrendered over the course of the season.
