SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's water polo team concluded play in the 2009 NorCal Cup Sunday afternoon. The Broncos who went, 2-2, in the two-day tournament, defeated Sonoma State, 8-2 in two overtime periods, and fell to No. 4 University of Hawai'i, 21-6, on the final day of action. The day before SCU defeated University of Pacific, 8-2, and dropped their game to SJSU, 17-7.
Versus the Seawolves of Sonoma State, the Broncos were able to outplay and outlast a fighting Sonoma team. Junior Meg Zimmerman, who had a strong overall weekend, drew three kick outs and scored a goal, and defensively posted a steal. Senior Amy Lamb was the SCU's biggest offensive threat, scoring three goals and tallied two assists, and she also had a steal. In the cage sophomore goalie Wren White had five blocks in the double overtime contest.
Santa Clara could not go undefeated on the day, as they fell to the fourth-ranked Rainbow Wahine of Hawai'i, in their final game of the weekend. The shorthanded Broncos were unable to get the point advantage throughout the four-period game. Zimmerman, who led SCU's offensive prowess drew four kick outs and scored a goal, and senior Allie Lamb had two balls reach the back of the net, posted two kick outs drawn and had one assist versus UH.
In their first collegiate tournament, Marina Allen, who scored two goals and had an assist, and Laura Espinosa, who had two kick outs drawn and one steal, were able to come off the bench and have a strong day of play.
The Broncos, 3-3 overall, look to bounce back into the win column at the Triton Tournament hosted at UC San Diego from Saturday, February 7, through Sunday, February 8. Opponents and game times have yet to be announced.
