Eight Water Polo Players Honored Academically, Team Posts Top 10 GPA Nationally

June 25, 2009

Eight Santa Clara women's water polo players have been named as Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-Academic Award honorees. The women's team finished No. 17 nationally after finishing a program-high runner-up at the WWPA Championship this spring.

In addition to its academic honors individually, Santa Clara posted a cumulative GPA of 3.194 after the Spring quarter, which is the ninth-best women's water polo cumulative GPA in the country. It is the second-best in the WWPA. It is the third straight year the women have been in the top 11 nationally with the team finishing seventh last year and 11th the year before.

"One of our team goals is to perform well in the classroom, and with a team GPA of 3.194 and eight players making the ACWPC All-Academic team, I think they did very well in their efforts at reaching this goal," said Santa Clara head coach Keith Wilbur. "I have always been impressed by the time they commit to playing water polo and their ability to do well academically. They are true student-athletes, and that is what Santa Clara is all about."
