Women's Water Polo Travels to Bakersfield

Feb. 10, 2010

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's water polo team (3-4) will travel to Bakersfield, Calif., the site of the 2010 WWPA Championships, this weekend for the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunner Invitational. The tournament begins Saturday and runs through Sunday and the Broncos will play two games each day.

On Saturday, Feb. 13, Santa Clara will play Concordia at 9:55 a.m. and No. 16 California Baptist at 3:20 p.m. Sunday, the Broncos face the fourth-ranked team on the Collegiate Water Polo Association's DIII poll, Occidental College, at 9:40 a.m. before meeting Cal State East Bay for the second time this season at 2 p.m.

Last season, Santa Clara earned two victories over Cal Baptist (5-2 overall in 2010), scoring double-digit goals each time. The Broncos last played Occidental (0-2) in the 2004 season, defeating the Tigers 13-8. Santa Clara has not played Concordia (2-1) since the women's water polo team began NCAA D-I competition in 2001. In the last outing against Cal State East Bay on Jan. 31, the No. 19 Broncos were stunned by a five-goal fourth-quarter surge by the Pioneers and dropped the game 13-10.

Junior Taylor Harkins leads the Bronco offense with 10 goals this season, while seniors Meg Zimmerman and Jenny Knutson each have nine. Junior goalie Wren White has started all seven games, posting 48 saves and 41 goals against.
