Women's Water Polo Picks Up Another Victory at Home

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The Santa Clara University women's water polo team earned a split Saturday at home, beating Cal State East Bay, 8-5, before falling to No. 20 San Jose State, 15-6.

vs. CAL STATE EAST BAY

Santa Clara (5-7) pulled away from the Pioneers (5-8) in the second half Saturday after a tight first two periods. The Broncos scored two goals in every period, while the defense shutout Cal State East Bay in both the first and fourth periods. The Pioneers netted three goals in the second period to make it close at 4-3. They kept it close at 6-5 with two more goals in the third, but Santa Clara pulled away with a 2-0 advantage in the fourth period.

The Broncos had three multi-goal scorers in the game. Lauren Baglietto scored two, Natalie Brauser scored two, and Elle Fredrickson scored two. Chloe Morrison and Kate Rodman added one goal each. Maddie Clough had a team-high three assists, and Rodman added a steal.

vs. No. 20 SAN JOSE STATE

Santa Clara led the No. 20 Spartans early. Rodman scored the game's first goal one minute in with an advantage to give the Broncos a 1-0. San Jose State (9-10) responded with four unanswered goals to lead 4-1 after one period.

The Broncos scored the first goal again in the second period. It was Rodman again scoring, pulling the Broncos within two goals at 4-2. But once again the Spartans scored three unanswered goals and led, 7-2, at halftime.

Rodman would finish with a team-best three goals. Francesca Moynihan and Avary Torres both added one goal each. Harped Daniels collected a team-high two steals.

COMING UP

The Broncos travel to Southern California next weekend for five games. They play a single game on Thursday against Concordia, then play four games in the Convergence Tournament, hosted by Pomona-Pitzer colleges.
