Women's Water Polo Splits on First Day of Convergence Tournament

CLAREMONT, Calif. — The Santa Clara University women's water polo team earned a split on the first day of the 2023 Convergence Tournament, defeating Cal State Fullerton, 17-5, in the afternoon after narrowly falling to Villanova, 9-6, in the morning.

vs. CAL STATE FULLERTON

The Broncos (6-9) dominated the Titans (7-10), allowing more than one goal in a period only once, in the second. Meanwhile, the Santa Clara offense scored at least three goals in every period, and went for five in both the second and third frames.

Kate Rodman led 11 different Santa Clara goal scorers with four. Halley Seed scored three, and Avary Torres netted two. Harper Daniels, Lauren Voss, Chloe Morrison, Megan Chambliss, Maddie Clough, Libby Slater, Elle Frederickson and Lauren Baglietto all scored one goal each. Georgia Lewis earned the win in net with eight saves.

Santa Clara led the game 3-1 after the first, 8-3 at halftime, and 13-4 through three periods. They added four more goals in the fourth while only allowing one to blow out the Titans, 17-5.

vs. VILLANOVA

Baglietto scored three goals for Santa Clara in the morning as the Broncos played Villanova (6-7) tight through the first half in both teams' tournament opener.

The score was tied, 4-4, at halftime, with both teams scoring two goals each in the first and second periods. The Wildcats finally pulled away in the third period, outscoring the Broncos, 3-1, to lead 7-5. They'd limit Santa Clara to only one goal again in the fourth while scoring two of their own to reach the 9-6 final score.

Rodman, Torres and Morrison each scored a goal in the game. Maddie Clough contributed two assists. Rodman added three steals. Liyara Senadheera made 10 saves in goal.
