Offense Explodes as Women's Water Polo Wins Again to Split Claremont Convergence's Final Day

CLAREMONT, Calif. — The Santa Clara University women's water polo team grabbed another victory Saturday on the final day of the Claremont Convergence Tournament, splitting again with a major 21-8 win over Westcliff University in the afternoon following a close 16-12 setback versus Long Island University in the morning.

vs. WESTCLIFF

The Broncos (7-10) put on an offensive explosion in the afternoon against the Warriors (1-8), beating them 21-8. Santa Clara's 21 goals were the most it's scored in more than 10 years, since also scoring 21 against Cal State San Bernardino on April 1, 2012.

The game certainly didn't look in the first period like it'd end up being what it did. Westcliff scored five goals in the first and Santa Clara held just a one-goal lead at 6-5. But the Warriors' offense disappeared after that, scoring only one goal in each of the remaining three periods. Meanwhile, the Broncos lit up the scoreboard with five, seven and three goals, respectively, in the remaining stanzas.

11 different Broncos scored goals in the victory, with six of them scoring at least two. Kate Rodman led the way with four goals, two assists and three steals. Chloe Morrison and Lauren Voss both scored three goals, while Voss added five assists. Megan Chambliss, Elle Fredrickson and Laruen Baglietto each scored two goals. Maddie Clough had four assists and a goal, Sydeny Mccabe had a goal, an assist and two steals, Harper Daniels had a goal and an assist, Libby Slater scored a goal and had a steal, and Francesca Moynihan scored one goal and dished an assist.

Liyara Senadheera and Georgia Lewis both played in net for the Broncos. Senadheera made five saves and Lewis had three with a steal.

vs. LIU

A high-scoring affair went the way of the Sharks (8-9) in the morning, with LIU getting out to an early 5-2 lead and never surrendering it.

Santa Clara made up some ground in the second period, outscoring the Sharks, 4-3. But LIU returned that favor in both the third and fourth periods with exact scores of 4-3 in each frame to expand its lead and win by four, 16-12.

Fredrickson, Rodman and Morrison scored two goals each for the Broncos. Mccabe, Voss, Daniels, Slater, Moynihan and Halley Seed all scored one goal each. Clough tallied four assists, while Seed added an assist and two steals to her goal.

Lewis made eight saves in net and grabbed a steal for the Broncos as the starting goalie.
