SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Many of Santa Clara's 20 sports began competition in recent weeks, but classes didn't begin on the Mission Campus until Monday.

On Tuesday, the department of athletics held its annual Welcome Back event for the nearly 400 student-athletes who were treated to dinner before a short program in Leavey Center.

Director of athletics Renee Baumgartner, in her second year, discussed a number of initiatives and upgrades, including the recently-installed Leavey Center floor, new locker rooms and offices, and the continued support of President Father Michael Engh and the University administration.

"Culture is a belief from the top down," Baumgartner said to the student-athletes and staff. "Everyone believes that we can all have an impact. We're working together to change the culture and have an impact on your lives. Now it's time to Stampede Ahead and Stampede Together!"
