Basketball Hosts Rice Thursday

Santa Clara, 1-1, hosts Rice University, 2-0, on Thurs., Nov. 18 at 7 pm. Rice has won both meetings with the Broncos. Rice finished off the Broncos off 74-56 on Dec 21, 1981 in Santa Clara. Rice won 70-57 in Houston last season on Dec. 16, 2009.
The Broncos are led by Kevin Foster, who is averaging 22.5 ppg and Marc Trasolini, who is averaging 16.0 ppg and 9.5 rpg. Troy Payne and Evan Roquemore are averaging 9.0 ppg.
Rice has four players averaging double figures. Connor Frizzelle leads the team with 13.0 ppg off the bench. Sophomore Arsalan Kazemi averages of 12.5 ppg, junior Lucas Kuipers averages 11.5 ppg and sophomore Tamir Jackson puts in 11.0 ppg. Kazemi, a native of Esfahan, Iran, also leads the team with 12.0 rpg.

The Owls head coach, Ben Braun is in his third season at Rice after coaching at Cal for 12 years; and is 2-0 vs. the Broncos after leading the Bears to a 67-60 Cal win on Nov. 20, 2001 in Berkeley and last year's 70-57 win over SCU in Houston. It was Rice's 1000th all-time win.
Santa Clara's Kevin Foster is the younger brother of former Rice four-year letterwinner Rodney Foster. The eldest Foster played point guard for the Owls and after playing professionally in Germany for a year he now works in business.

Santa Clara's football team was Rice University's opponent when the Owls opened Rice Stadium in 1950. Rice won the contest played on Sept. 30, 1950, 27-7.
Santa Clara finished the year at 4-6 after winning the Orange Bowl over Kentucky the previous year, 21-13 and posting an 8-2-1 record. Santa Clara dropped football in 1991 after defeating Saint Mary's 44-14 in its final game.

Santa Clara lost to Southern California Monday night in Los Angeles, 86-73. The Broncos led 50-47 before the Trojans went on a 14-2 run to put the game away late in the second half.Santa Clara was led by Kevin Foster's 26 points, including four three-pointers. Marc Trasolini added 15 points and nine rebounds. Troy Payne put nine points in the basket and Robert Smith scored eight and tied a career-high with eight rebounds. Foster added two steals and Evan Roquemore had two steals and four points.
Trasolini's fifth career double-double paced the Broncos in their season opener as Santa Clara defeated Cal State Bakersfield 82-77 at the Leavey Center on Nov. 12. Foster added 19 points in 31 minutes for the Broncos in his first game since Dec. 1st, 2009. Bronco head coach Kerry Keating is now 4-0 in season openers as a head coach.
Trasolini finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Roquemore had 14 points and four assists in 27 minutes in his first career collegiate game. Ben Dowdell finished with 13 points and six rebounds.
In spite of the Roadrunners out-shooting the Broncos from the field, the three point arc and the free throw line, percentage-wise, Santa Clara scored 82 points to defeat CSUB 82-77 on Nov. 12. Bronco head coach Kerry Keating is 10-1 in his career when his team scores 80+ points.
Foster: 17 x 19+
Kevin Foster scored 19 in the opening game vs. CSUB and then added 26 at Southern California. Only playing in six games last year before breaking his foot, he scored 19+ points four times last season and 10 times in the last 15 games he has played, spanning his first three years. Foster scored 19+ points 11 times in 2008-09, including five of the last eight games of the season. He has hit a career-high five three-pointers four times.
Foster was nicknamed 'Microwave' by his father during his youth the Detroit Piston's Vinnie Johnson. Johnson earned the nickname 'the Microwave' from Boston Celtics guard Danny Ainge for his ability to score many points in a short period of time, heating up the offense.

After breaking Steve Nash's single season record for three-pointers made as a freshman in 2008-09 with 85, it's no surprise sophomore-redshirt Kevin Foster is already climbing up the three point career lists as well. Foster also owns the record for three-pointers attempted as well with 232 shot his freshman season.
Currently, Foster has attempted 328 three-pointers, which is No. 10 on the career list and five away from jumping Calvin Johnson's 332 attempts from 2005-09. Foster has made 115 career threes, which ties Johnson's mark at No. 10. Foster needs five to pass Brandon Rohe at No. 9 with 119 (2003-07).
The career record for three pointers made is Steve Nash's 263 from 1992-96. The career record for three-pointers attempted is 679 by Kyle Bailey from 2001-05. Foster will have a leg up on the competition, career-wise, as his six games last season will count towards his career totals as well.
