Ohio Defeats Santa Clara in Final Game of IBN Sports Las Vegas Invite

In the first-ever meeting, Santa Clara lost to Ohio 78-72 Saturday in Las Vegas in its final game of the IBN Sports Las Vegas Invitational.  The Bobcats finished the last 5:10 on a 12-2 run.  Santa Clara is 4-3 and Ohio is 4-1.  Santa Clara hosts UC Santa Barbara Sat., Dec. 4 at 7:30 pm in the Leavey Center.

Santa Clara shot 43.6 percent (24 of 55) from the field, including 34.8 percent from beyond the arc (8 of 23). The Broncos collected 37 rebounds, 14 assists, four steals and two blocks.  They shot 66.7 percent from the free throw line (16 of 24) with 14 turnovers. Ohio shot 42.3 percent (22 of 52) from the field, including 38.1 percent from beyond the arc (8 of 21). The Bobcats collected 32 rebounds, nine assists, nine steals and four blocks.  They shot 86.7 percent from the free throw line (26 of 30) with 11 turnovers.

Individually, Santa Clara was led by Marc Trasolini's second straight 19 point game.  Foster scored 10 points and added five assists, but was 3 of 14 from the field and 1 of 7 from the three point line. Raymond Cowels III scored 10 points with six rebounds. Trasolini and Ben Dowdell both collected seven rebounds.  Ohio's 2010 MAC Freshman of the Year, D.J. Cooper scored 29 points, including a perfect 12 of 12 from the free throw line.  Nick Kellogg added 14 and Ivo Baltic led the Bobcats with nine rebounds. 

In the first half, the two traded baskets in the first minute with Troy Payne scoring on a put-back. Ivo Baltic hit two free throws at 16:19 and Cunningham tied it up 4-4 with a basket at 15:59.

Cowels three at 15:25 gave the Broncos a 7-4 lead. Santa Clara went up 11-6 on back-to-back lay-ups by John McArthur and Trasolini.  Timeout Bobcats.
 
DeVaughn Washington hit two free throws and Trasolini answered with a pair of his own at 12:28, 13-8 Broncos.  Smith hit a wide-open three after a fancy pass from Trasolini and Baltic answered with a lay-up at 11:27, 16-10 Broncos.
 
Trasolini drained a three to make it 19-10 Broncos at 10:19.  Timeout Bobcats.  Cooper responded with a three.  A tough pass from Harrison resulted in a two-pointer for Michael Santos at 9:14.

Cooper was in the midst of a 9-2 run for the Bobcats when Foster crushed a three and was fouled.  After the media timeout, Foster hit the free throw for the four-point play to put the Broncos up 25-19 at 7:34.

After Baltic hit a put-back, Cowels hit his second three.  The Bobcats went on an 8-2 run before Evan Roquemore sank two free throws with 27.4 second left to put the Broncos up 34-29.  Kellogg sank a three at the buzzer and the halftime score was 34-32.

In the first half, Santa Clara shot 36.7 percent (11 of 30) from the field, including 38.5 percent from beyond the arc (5 of 13). The Broncos collected 21 rebounds, seven assists, three steals and one block.  They shot 77.8 percent from the free throw line (7 of 9) with six turnovers. Ohio shot 37.5 percent (9 of 24) from the field, including 22.2 percent from beyond the arc (2 of 9). The Bobcats collected 16 rebounds, two assists, four steals and four blocks.  They shot 92.3 percent from the free throw line (12 of 13) with eight turnovers.  Cowels led the Broncos with eight and Cooper led Ohio with 10.

In the second half, Cooper gave Ohio a brief lead with a three, but Trasolini hit his own and then Foster hit a jumper to make it 39-35 at 18:38.  Trasolini flicked his wrist for a three at 16:55.  Cooper hit two free throws.  T.J. Hall hit a three to put Ohio within two at 16:42 and then Cooper hit a three to give Ohio the lead. 

Trasolini dunked the ball at 15:28 to give the Broncos a 44-43 lead. The Bobcats went on a 13-2 run from 18:38-14:27 when Keating whistled for time with the Bobcats leading 48-44. 

Cowels floater stopped the run and then Roquemore's three and Michael Santos' jumper made it 51-48 Broncos at 12:44.  Timeout Bobcats.  T.J. Hall responded with a three to tie it up 51-51.  The two traded baskets with Chris Cunningham hitting two straight buckets to put SCU up 55-53 at 11:12. Cooper hit a three to give Ohio the lead again at 11:04. 

The teams continued to trade baskets.  After a technical foul was called on Keely, Foster sank two free throws and then Dowdell stepped up to sink one to give the Broncos a 61-60 lead at 8:39.  After two Bobcat free throws, Cunningham laid it to give the Broncos a 63-62 lead at 8:15.  Cooper hit a bucket and then Dowdell sank a free throw to tie it up 64-64 at 7:20.  Dowdell hit the free throw line two seconds later to sink two more, 66-64 Broncos. 

Asown Sayles hit a basket and then after Roquemore missed two free throws, Dowdell grabbed the rebound and Payne hit the put-back to give the Broncos a 68-66 lead at 6:02.

Trasolini converted on Payne's no-look pass under the basket to take a 70-66 lead at 5:10.  Timeout Bobcats.  Dowdell took a charge from a flying Cooper in the lane to get the ball at 4:53.  It was Cooper's fourth foul so he hit the bench.  Dowdell took another charge under the basket on Ohio's next possession to give Hall four fouls at 3:59.

The Bobcats hit three of four free throws to pull within one at 2:12, 70-69 Broncos.  Kellogg crushed a three at 1:00 to put Ohio up 72-70.  Foster's three clanged off the rim and Trasolini was whistled for his fifth foul with 26.2 seconds left.  Cooper sank both to put the Bobcats up by four.  Roquemore sank both to make it a two-point game at 20.7, 74-72 Ohio.

Cooper was immediately fouled by Roquemore and he hit both to put Ohio up by four at 20.7.  Hall stole the ball from Foster and he dunked it to give the Bobcats a 78-72 win.
