Broncos Fall in First Game of 44th Annual Cable Car Classic

With Bronco senior Ben Dowdell picking up his first career double-double with a career-high 13 rebounds Santa Clara fell 54-53 to Delaware in the first game of the 44th annual Cable Car Classic. Santa Clara will play Fordham at 6 pm Thursday night and Delaware advances to the championship game vs. American at 8:15 pm.  Santa Clara is 7-7 and Delaware is 6-4.

"When you're not shooting the ball from the outside, like we were tonight, you've got to establish an inside presence, and we didn't really get that established," Broncos coach Kerry Keating said. "You either have to get closer to the basket or at least get into the paint or to the free-throw line, or get back more on the defensive end, and we had trouble doing those things tonight."

"We have a quick turnaround tomorrow and have to get ready to win," added Keating.  "We have to overcome tonight in a short period of time and be ready to play at 6 pm tomorrow night." 

Santa Clara shot 28.8 percent from the field (15 of 52) and 15.8 percent beyond the arc (3 of 19).  The Broncos collected 35 rebounds, nine assists, seven steals, one block and had 10 turnovers.  They were 20 of 30 from the free throw line. Delaware shot 38.3 percent from the field (18 of 47) and 11.1 percent beyond the arc (2 of 18).  The Fighting Blue Hens collected 35 rebounds, seven assists, three steals, four blocks and had 17 turnovers.  They were 16 of 19 from the free throw line.

Individually Dowdell led the Broncos with a career-high 13 rebounds and 10 points.  Raymond Cowels III finished with the 13 first-half points he scored and Kevin Foster had 13 points, including shooting 3 of 15 from the field.  Dowdell also added a game-high three steals and Foster had a game-high four assists.

UD was led by the 12 points of Devon Saddler and the 10 rebounds of Malcolm Hawkins.  Jamelle Hagins added eight points and eight rebounds.  Alphonso Dawson scored nine. 

Chris Cunningham hit a free throw (18:11) and then tipped the ball in at 17:36 to put SCU up 3-0 in the early going.  Saddler scored Delaware's first bucket at 16:40.  Cowels scored at 14:03.

UD went on a 6-0 run from 14:07-10:28 when Foster sank his first basket of the night.  Hagins dunked the ball at 10:02 to put UD up 12-7.

 Foster sank two free throws at 9:52.  Cowels sank a far-out three at 9:17 to tie it up 12-12. 

Cowels answered with his second three at 8:32 to tie it up 15-15 and start the Broncos on an 18-3 run.  Dowdell drove the basket at 7:55 and then scored a bucket under the basket at 7:04 to put SCU up 19-15.  Saddler fouled Cowels and he stroked both in.  Marc Trasolini scored his first points with a pair of free throws and then  Niyi Harrison snuck around the defender to score a bucket, 25-15 Broncos at 4:04. 

Saddler scored at 3:11 to stop the Bronco run.  It was the Hens first basket in 5:28.  Dowdell sank a free throw at 1:19 and then  UD scored on two free throws by Dawson to make it 26-20 at :55.

Keating called timeout at :37.1 to draw up a play and Cowels scored under the basket and was fouled at :21.1, sinking the free throw to make it 29-20 Broncos.  Johnson sank the Blue Hens first three of the night to make it 29-23 at the half.

Santa Clara shot 36.0 percent from the field (9 of 25) and 22.2 percent beyond the arc (2 of 9).  The Broncos collected 19 rebounds, five assists, six steals, one block and had six turnovers.  They were 9 of 15 from the free throw line. Delaware shot 34.8 percent from the field (8 of 23) and 14.3 percent beyond the arc (1 of 7).  The Fighting Blue Hens collected 15 rebounds, two assists, two steals, one block and had nine turnovers.  They were 6 of 7 from the free throw line. 

Cowels had 13 points in the first half and Dowdell led the team with five rebounds.  Saddler scored eight points for UD and had two players with four rebounds.

In the second half UD took a 32-31 lead at 14:49 before Foster scored to give the Broncos the lead back at 14:08.  The teams traded baskets before Foster hit a free throw to make it 37-36 at 10:47.  Dowdell sank a free throw and then UD scored to tie it up 38-38 at 9:24.  Dowdell was fouled on a break-away on sank one to give the Broncos a 39-38 lead at 9:16.  UD sank two of its own free throws to move ahead 40-39 at 9:04. 

The Broncos were 13 of 23 from the free throw line when Cunningham sank both to put SCU up 41-40 at 8:40. 

UD then went on an 8-0 run.  Dawson tied it up with a free throw at 6:37.  After a Hawkins block, Dawson dunked it and then hit a three at 5:36 to put UD up 46-41.  UD hit a pair of free throws when Roquemore hit a pair to stop the UD run. 

Trasolini scored under the basket at 2:57 to make it 48-45 UD.  After back-to-back UD baskets, Foster sank his first three, but UD answered with another basket inside.  Foster was fouled shooting a three and he hit all three to bring the Broncos within one at :50, 54-53 UD.  Cowels grabbed the UD rebound and Keating called for timeout with 6.9 seconds left.  Foster attempted a shot close-range, missed in heavy traffic and Dowdell grabbed the rebound but couldn't hit the iron.
