Women's Crew Captures Pair of Races

April 22, 2006

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's crew put together a strong day of racing at the Stanford Lightweight Invitational on the waters of the Port of Redwood City Saturday afternoon as they gained some critical momentum heading into next weekend's WCC Championships by defeating rival Saint Mary's in a pair of regattas.

The WCC Championships will take place next Friday, April 28 in Sacramento.

In the first event of the day, the JV Eight Broncos got out to a quick start and able to hold onto a lead throughout the 2000-meter duel. It was a solid victory for the JV boat which kept its composure and held off a late charge by Saint Mary's.

The Varsity Eight also jumped out to a quick lead off the start in their race and never looked back. The Broncos showed incredible resilience in holding off a surging Saint Mary's crew and were able to squeeze out the victory by three-tenths of a second.

"This was a big win for us today," said head coach Carlo Facchino. "We've had our ups and downs this season but we've continued to work hard and believe in each other. Today's win comes at just the right time as we prepare for the WCC Championships this coming Friday."
