Men’s Golfer Impresses at Professional Event

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.Matt McCarty of the Santa Clara men's golf team had an impressive showing at a professional event in his hometown.

McCarty fired a final-round 3-under par 67 to finish tied for fifth at 4-under 206 in the 74th annual Arizona Open Championship, which was held Thursday through Saturday at Troon Country Club in Scottsdale.

Calum Hill, who just completed his collegiate career at Oregon State, captured the event with a 54-hole total of 10-under 200 (66-66-68), four shots ahead of defending champion Brian Cooper of Phoenix in the Southwest PGA tournament.

Matt McClung, a senior at Grand Canyon University, had the best finish among amateurs, posting a 3-under 205 (68-66-71) to edge McCarty who accumulated a scoring average of 72.96, second on the Santa Clara team, during 2016-17.

McCarty was even or below par in each round, firing a 69 on Thursday and 70 on Friday. He tallied seven birdies and four bogeys in the final 18 holes.
