IRVINE, Calif. - Long Island University upset Santa Clara University at the UC Irvine Collegiate Classic, 2-0, on second-half goals by Adam Kelemet and Jakeem Johnson.
The Broncos return home and prepare for Sunday night's match with Sacramento State (2-0-1). Santa Clara's 1989 National Championship team will be honored at halftime, part of a reunion weekend celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Broncos' team that went 20-0-3.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Buck Shaw Stadium, 500 El Camino Real, Santa Clara campus. For tickets or more information call 408-554-4660.
LIU broke a scoreless tie 12 minutes after the intermission when Kelemet cleaned up a rebound following the denial of a shot by Nick Alderiso. Kelemet would assist in Johnson's transition goal in the 67th to put LIU up by two.
Santa Clara was held scoreless despite out-shooting the Blackbirds 13-5, which included a decisive 10-3 shot advantage in the second half.
"We were on top for 60 minutes," said Santa Clara Head Coach Cameron Rast. "The opportunities were there, we created some chances. It just wasn't enough, a bit disappointing."
The Broncos continued to pressure, generating six corners to LIU's two. Nine different SCU players challenged LIU's goal with shots. Adam's Janssen's six saves for the Blackbirds would prove to be the difference.
"Long Island stayed very organized and were patient," added Rast. "The first goal gave them confidence and credit them for doing what they needed to do in holding us off late in the second half."
Santa Clara (1-2-0) split its two matches on the neutral field at Irvine over the holiday weekend after knocking off Cleveland State 3-2 Saturday.
Long Island (1-2-0) - 13-time NCAA Tournament qualifiers - had made the cross-country trip a week early to prepare for No. 15 UC Irvine and Santa Clara. The Blackbirds also earned a split, suffering a narrow 1-0 loss at the hands of UCI Friday.
