LOS GATOS, Calif. - Santa Clara sophomore Jay Wong took his game to the pre-qualifying tournament for the SAP Open this week. SCU's No. 1 men's tennis player won his first three matches of the tournament to move closer to qualification for the qualifying tournament that takes place this weekend in Los Gatos.
Wong knocked off Alexander Moser 6-0, 6-1 in the Round of 64 to get the tournament started. He then followed that performance with a dominating 6-2, 6-2 win against Alex Kotlyar in the Round of 32. The San Jose native then finished his day on Tuesday with an impressive 6-1, 6-0 victory over Eric Gast to move into the quarterfinals of the tournament. The matches were played at the Los Gatos Swin and Racquet Club.
Wong is now two wins away from becoming the second Santa Clara player in two years to reach the qualifying tournament. If Wong reaches the final on Wednesday, he will advance to the tournament. Last year, Brian Brogan reached the qualifying tournament, but was unable to play since the Broncos were on the road.
The SAP Open takes place from Feb. 18-24 at HP Pavilion in San Jose.
