Men’s Water Polo Closes Out Regular Season On The Road

SANTA CLARA, Calif.- The Santa Clara men's water polo team faces No. 3 Stanford on Saturday at noon to close out its regular season.

The Broncos (7-14, 2-5), who split a pair of games this weekend, defeating Fresno Pacific,17-11, and falling to Air Force,13-11, expect good competition from the Cardinal (16-3,1-1).

"To play a quality team like Stanford before we head into our conference championship is great opportunity for our team," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "Stanford is one of the best teams in the country, and we know they're going to be really good competition.  As we prepare for conference championships, there are certain areas of the game that we are focusing on.  If we can execute in those areas versus Stanford, then we should be able to do the same versus teams that we will see in our conference championships."

Santa Clara honored its seniors, DeMarco Orella and John Raineri, on Sunday prior to the Air Force game. Both seniors scored twice within 30 seconds during the final period.

Reilley May and Dane Estrella each posted three goals against Fresno Pacific, and Mac Carey, Patrick Kirk and Jack Rottman tallied two goals apiece.

Kirk leads the team with 28 goals, and Carey, who has team-high 34 assists, is tied with Orella for second with 25 goals. Shane Hughes has team-high 29 steals and Dane Estrella has 26. May has drawn the most kickouts (46) and 5-meters (4) this season, and Emil Huebner has started all 21 games in net, with 146 blocks, 33 steals, and 15 assists.

The Broncos head to San Diego on Friday, Nov. 17 for the opening of the Western Water Polo Association Championships. They will face host UC San Diego at 12:45 p.m. on the opening day.
