Stanford’s Event Initiates 2011 Schedule for Women’s Golf

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – With less than a week until their first tournament of the spring, the Santa Clara University women's golf team is preparing for what promises to be a very successful 2011 campaign.  The team is set to play at Stanford's Peg Barnard Invitational, Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 19-20.

Offically promoted to head coach last week, Krystal Kelly will guide a team that boasts two of the top players in the West Coast Conference in Hawaiian imports Tamara Surtees (pictured) and Miki Ueoka. Each have won tournament titles at SCU and were both named West Coast Conference First Team honorees a year ago.

"Krystal's practices are already showing results for us on the course," said Surtees about the early season prep with her new head coach. "She handles each of our games very well, and has been doing a great job specifying what we need to work on individually, as well as a team."

In addition to playing practice rounds, hitting balls and rolling puts, the team has been conditioning with trainer, Kristin Heaston, and working on the mental aspects of golf with Rick Sessinghaus.

"The other day at practice we tied our record team score, which definitely reflects the drills and everything we have been working on this season," said Surtees. "We have no doubt that we will be prepared for the weekend."

The Peg Barnard Invitational at the Stanford Golf Club in Palo Alto is one of four events the Broncos will enter prior to the WCC Championships April 18-19 at San Juan Oaks in Hollister.
