ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. - Fresh off a top 5 finish last week in San Jose, the defending champion of Cal Poly's Women's Invitational, Balbina Guajardo (Monterrey, Mexico) is just two shots off the tournament lead following Round One play at Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande, Calif.
Junior teammate Brooke Stephens (Durham, Calif.) was also outstanding on Monday, posting a 3-over par 75 to place 10th heading into Tuesday's final round.
Not only did Guajardo win the Cal Poly Invitational last year, the Broncos took the team title in 2011. A collective 314 on Monday puts SCU in seventh place among a 16-team field.
The event Monday and Tuesday of next week wraps up the Broncos 2012 fall schedule. Following the winter break, Santa Clara will tee it up in tournament play February, 11-12 at Yorba Linda Country Club in Southern California.
