DANVILLE, Calif. – Annie Freman and Monique Riley both shot a 3-over-par 75 to pace the Santa Clara women's golf team, which completed the first round of the WCC Championship tournament in fifth place with a 302 (+14) total.
The middle round of the three-day event will tee off Tuesday morning at the 5,995-yard, par-72 Blackhawk Country Club Lakeside Course in Danville, Calif.
BYU, ranked 38th in the country, scored an even-par 288 to lead the event by five shots over No. 49 Pepperdine.
The Broncos have time to make up some ground. They trail Gonzaga by just six strokes, San Francisco by eight and are nine behind the second-place Waves entering Tuesday's second round.
"We learned a lot from today's round," head coach Krystal Kelly said. "Tomorrow we need to be a little more aggressive. We played too tentatively today."
Freman and Riley are tied with two other golfers for 13th place after Monday's first round. Kristin Le and Ashley Noda are one shot behind their teammates after each carded a first-round 4-over 76. Noda led the tournament field with 14 pars.
USF's Vanessa Ha takes a two-shot lead into the second round after carding a 4-under 68 on Monday.
"The only difference in today's round compared to our last few rounds was we didn't make very many birdies. We're looking to change that tomorrow," Kelly added.
