May 5, 2009

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's soccer program's 2009 recruiting class was named No. 1 in the West Coast Conference by TopDrawerSoccer.com, it was announced last week. The class is highlighted by midfielder Olivia Klei and Lauren Matheson, who are ranked No. 8 and No. 9 in TopDrawer's Top 100 respectively.

"This is arguably the best class we have signed since our 1996 class that went to the Final Four four-consecutive years," said Santa Clara head women's soccer coach Jerry Smith. "I expect these players to make an immediate impact on our team next season, as many of them will vie for starting positions, which will be an integral component in our progressing program."

The tandem is joined by Allie Vernon (ranked No. 25 on the Top 100), Meleana Shim, Zoe Jeffers and Amanda Webster on offense.

According to TopDrawer, "The Broncos have far and away the most decorated class in the West Coast Conference and are positioned to put last year's season in the review mirror. Combine their offensive additions with some strong prospects on the defensive side, and all-world goalkeeper Bianca Henninger and you have the makings of a resurgence for Santa Clara."

Rounding out the top four classes in the WCC are Loyola Marymount (No. 2), Portland (No. 3) and Pepperdine (No. 4).
