SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara Athletics held the official opening of the Stevens Soccer Training Center Fri., June 5. Funding for the facility came from a $7.7 million gift from Santa Clara University alumna and trustee, Mary Stevens '84, and her husband, Mark, a prominent venture capitalist. Speakers included University President Fr. Michael Engh, Interim Director of Athletics Jeff Mitchell, women's soccer head coach Jerry Smith, and men's soccer head coach Cameron Rast.
"The new, state-of-the-art Stevens' Soccer Training Center offers a fresh, bold, and classy venue that sets the standard for a more vibrant future for Santa Clara athletics," said Interim Director of Athletics Jeff Mitchell. "We are especially grateful to Mark and Mary Stevens and their family for their kind generosity and for their engaged spirit of enthusiasm for Santa Clara University and for Bronco athletics. This facility will take a backseat to no one, and to see the excited expressions on our student-athletes' faces is to know that we got it right!"
The stylish 7,000 square foot facility features separate men's and women's locker rooms and showers, separate men's and women's lounges as well as separate staff lockers and showers. Other amenities include a cutting-edge team and video room, shared treatment center with soak tub, and laundry and storage space.
The gift and the new building mark the first steps in a significant recommitment of University resources, time, and talent to create a more nationally prominent athletics program at Santa Clara University.
