SUNNYVALE, Calif. - Santa Clara split two games this afternoon at the National Invitational Softball Tournament, defeating Miami (Ohio) 2-1, but falling to San Jose State 2-0. The NIST is being hosted by San Jose State University at the Twin Creeks Complex in Sunnyvale.
Santa Clara moves to 9-13 on the season and is 2-3 at the NIST. The Broncos will face host San Jose State for the second time this weekend tomorrow at 10 a.m. The consolation championship and championship games will be played at noon and 2 p.m., respectfully.
Today's first game was scoreless through five and one-half innings of play. San Jose State opened the bottom of the sixth with singles by Becca Baldridge and Katie Gomes. A sacrifice bunt by Amy Walter advanced the runners one base. A Santa Clara infield error allowed the first run to score, while Gomes scored on a Veronica Ramos single.
Santa Clara did rally in the top of the seventh, with the bases loaded with no outs recorded at one point, but was unable to post any runs on the scoreboard.
Candice Akin picked up the win for the Spartans and is 3-3 on the season. Santa Clara's Krista Barry took the loss and is now 5-6 on the year. Sabrina Quintero earned the save for SJSU.
In the afternoon match, Santa Clara picked up two unearned runs in the top of the second as Miami of Ohio committed three errors. Despite eight Redhawk hits, it was all the Broncos needed, as Miami couldn't overcome six errors and fell short while rallying in the seventh.
Junior Deanna Rodriguez picked up her fourth win of the season to move to 4-6, while Amber Arnold took the loss for Miami and is now 3-4 on the season.
