BERKELEY, Calif. - Santa Clara softball fell to second-ranked California twice this evening, both by 6-0 scores, at Levine-Fricke Field in Berkeley. The Broncos are now 6-8 on the season.
Santa Clara was held to three hits across the doubleheader, notched by Vanessa Werner, Shannon Linerud and Kelley Johnson.
Cal's Kelly Anderson (3-0) no-hit the Broncos through four and two-thirds innings in the first game and the Bears got all the offense they would need in the first on a single from catcher Haley Woods that scored third baseman Vicky Galindo.
Woods delivered again for Cal in the third, lacing a pitch from SCU starter Liz Courter (3-4) into center field to plate right fielder Alex Sutton and Galindo. The Bears added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth.
In the nightcap, Woods collected three RBIs and starter Kristina Thorson (3-0) tossed five innings and struck out six Broncos to pick up the victory. The Bears scored four runs in the first, highlighted by first baseman Julie Meyer's double that scored short stop Chelsea Spencer and second baseman Jessica Pamanian. Woods doubled in the second to bring in two more runs.
Santa Clara continues non-conference play with a doubleheader against Cal Poly on Saturday. First pitch is set for noon at Bob Janssen Field in San Luis Obispo.
