Broncos Drop 13-1 Decision to Host Cardinal

Stanford, Calif. - The Santa Clara softball team dropped its second game of the Stanford Invitational, losing to host and No. 7 Stanford by a score of 13-1 in five innings.  Jenny Brown and Ashley Blier each got a hit in the Broncos' losing cause.

Stanford got on the board in the top of the first, after Michelle Smith hit a double that scored Maddy Coon and Lauren Lappin, making the score 2-0. In the bottom of the first, Jenny Brown started the Santa Clara comeback with a double. Jessica Clee followed up with a single and Brown advanced to third. On a wild throw, Brown was able to score and cut into the Cardinal lead.

In the second inning, the home team tacked on another run before breaking the game open in the fourth inning, as pitcher Jerrica Castagno gave up four runs to give Stanford a commanding 7-1 lead. The Cardinal scored a total of six runs in the final two innings to account for the final margin.

Jerrica Castagno (1-2) took the loss, while Becky McCullough (2-0) picked up the win.

Santa Clara evens its record to 3-3 on the year and returns to action tomorrow for the second day of the Stanford Invitational. First up will be Drake at 9:30 a.m., followed by Pacific Coast Softball Conference rival Sacramento State at 1:30 p.m.
