MORAGA, Calif. - The Santa Clara softball team was swept by PCSC rival Saint Mary's in their weekend series. The Broncos dropped all four contests, including two losses on Sunday afternoon. SCU fell 6-1 in the early game and 5-0 in the final game of the series. Santa Clara (5-40, 0-12 PCSC) was led by freshman shortstop Kristin Welsh. Welsh, who tallied her ninth RBI of the season, doubled to score Megan Smith and earn SCU's lone run on the day.
In the early game, Santa Clara posted their solo run in the 6-1 loss. Emily Batt, Jackie Nicora, Nicole Picard and Welsh each tallied a hit in the game. While SMC scored five runs in the final two innings of the game to prevent the Broncos from earning a conference victory, SCU pitcher Jenna Fong had a great outing. The Sacramento, Calif. native had five strikeouts in the game and pitched three scoreless innings.
Junior Kaitlyn Rauschnot took over mound duties in the final game of the series. The Bronco pitcher threw three strikeouts, but it was not enough to prevent a 5-0 SCU shutout. Amanda Edmonson, Picard and Stephanie Smith tallied Santa Clara's three hits in the contest. Edmonson managed to get to third base, but SCU could not bring the Bronco infielder home to score a run in the game.
Santa Clara looks to bounce back into the win column on Monday, April 20, versus Hawai'i. SCU will take on the Rainbow's in a doubleheader. First pitch at West Valley College Softball Field is set for 2 p.m.
