SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara women's volleyball team honored seniors Megan Anders, Haley Cameron, Alyssa Anderson and Katherine Douglas on Saturday but the emotional Senior Day festivities wore off and, despite the Broncos starting with a 2-0 lead, they lost in five to the Pepperdine Waves in the final match of the year Saturday afternoon at Leavey Center. Set scores were 25-13, 25-13, 18-25, 17-25, 10-15.

Santa Clara ends the year at 11-16 overall, 6-12 in the WCC. Pepperdine finishes at 15-11, 9-9.

Anders led the Broncos with 17 kills and hit .481 for the match. Taylor Milton had 11 kills, 15 digs and five service aces. Anderson also had a double-double with 51 assists and 11 digs. Santa Clara hit .287 for the match (61-18-150) with 60 assists, 65 digs and 7.0 team blocks.

Katie Messing led Pepperdine with a match-high 18 kills while Taylor Racich added 13 and Kelley Larsen 10. The Waves hit .261 for the match (61-21-153) with 56 assists, 59 digs and 8.0 team blocks.

The Broncos took the first two sets by identical scores and dominated the play throughout. After falling behind 4-2 in the first, SCU ran off seven straight points with Milton serving to take a 9-4 lead. Anders had four of her six set-kills during the run and hit .857 in the win.

Kills by Nikki Hess and Lacey Maas and a pair of service aces from Milton closed out the first set win to put the Broncos up 1-0.

After Pepperdine scored the first point of set two, the Broncos rolled off the next eight with Anderson at the serve. Cameron and Milton teamed for a stuff for a 2-1 lead and Cameron and Sabrina Clayton blocked an attempt by Racich for a 7-1 advantage and a Pepperdine timeout.

Two kills by Anders and a Racich attack error gave the Broncos their first set point. Pepperdine fought for two more points before Clayton closed out the win with a kill off an Anderson assist and 25-13 set two win.

After the break, the Waves took an early 5-1 lead forcing a Santa Clara timeout. A Larsen kill upped Pepperdine's advantage to 8-2 before the Broncos rallied for the next five points to pull within 8-7.

The Broncos could never get the equalizer and Pepperdine began to pull away. Racich knocked one down for a 22-16 lead and Santa Clara used its second timeout to stem the tide.

A Samantha Cash kill and an Anders attack error gave Pepperdine the 25-18 third set win.

Tied at 4-4 in the fourth, the Waves took the lead on a Cameron attack error. The Broncos responded with kills by Milton, Clayton and Cameron for a 7-5 lead. A Cameron kill gave the Broncos a 10-7 lead but Pepperdine used a 4-0 run to retake the lead and never relinquish it.

The Waves took a 2-0 lead to start off the fifth set but two attacking errors and a kill by Milton quickly gave the Broncos the upper hand.

The score was 8-7 in favor of the Waves before the teams switched sides. The Waves took six out of the next eight points to give them a 13-9 lead. A block by Clayton slowed the momentum but a kill by Messing gave Pepperdine the final point and come-from-behind win.
