Volleyball's Mead Named Preseason All-WCC for Third Straight Year

WCC RELEASE/VIDEO

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara volleyball's Kirsten Mead has been recognized among the top players in the West Coast Conference at the outset of the year for the third straight season. The senior setter is one of 10 players named to the 2017 All-WCC Preseason Volleyball Team, announced by the conference on Thursday.

Santa Clara is picked to finish fifth in the conference poll with 48 points, just two points behind Pacific. The preseason poll and All-WCC team are voted on solely by the league's 10 head coaches.

Despite missing 14 matches last season due to injury, Mead earned an All-WCC Honorable Mention accolade to make it three years in a row with a conference honor. She was named First Team All-WCC in 2015 and selected as the WCC Freshman of the Year in 2014 to go with an All-WCC Honorable Mention.

No. 10 BYU was picked to defend its conference championship from a season ago, earning a maximum nine first-place votes and 81 points. The Cougars and San Diego Toreros — who were picked to finish second — each had two players chosen for the preseason all-conference squad.

The Broncos play their first matches of 2017 this weekend at the D.C. Volleyball Challenge in Washington, D.C. They take on American Friday at 4 p.m. PDT, followed by Saturday matches against Georgetown (9 a.m.) and Howard (4 p.m.).
