Reid Breaks Own 800m Record at Stanford Invite

The men's and women's track teams competed at the SF State Distance Carnival and the Stanford Invitational Friday and Saturday. Both teams return to competition next Saturday at the San Francisco State Johnny Mathis Invitational.

On Friday, freshman Kevin Oliver got the weekend of competition off to a great start winning his section of the 10000m with a mark of 31:56.08. It was Oliver's first attempt at the distance and good for third best all-time for Santa Clara.

Other highlights from the SF State Distance Carnival included senior Stephen Koch winning the 3000m Steeple in a season's best 9:30.84 and Nhunguyen Le finishing fourth in the steeple with a personal record 9:42.93.

A slew of Bronco's competed in the 5000m led by Freshman Guadalupe Gonzalez who set a personal best of 15:21.92 finishing 8th in his heat. Junior Chris Mosier was secnd in his heat also setting a personal record running 15:38.53.

In the middle distance events Robbie Reid got his weekend of racing off to a good start running a season's best 3:56.73 for seventh overall in the men's 1500m.

Also competing in the 1500m was Sophomore Richard Zhu, who ran a PR of 4:01.92. In the 800m, Freshman Matt Mosier made his first trip under the 2:00 barrier this year with a PR of 1:58.93, and Richard Zhu doubled back from his 1500m race to run 1:58.00.

John Laughlin and Josh Hernandez competed in the 400m to prepare for the Stanford invite the following day and Laughlin set a PR of 51.79.

The women were led by Freshman Erin Hartwig who won a tactical two mile race with a strong final 3 laps winning by 12 seconds in 11:27.97.

Meghan McNamara also ran with the lead pack most of the race ultimately finishing sixth in 11:48.94.

On Saturday at the Stanford invitational, Reid ran a personal best and new school record of 1:53.40 finishing 3rd in his heat. He was joined by Josh Hernandez who ran 1:56.80 in the same race for 8th.

Laughlin struggled after his personal best at 400m the day before, crossing the line in 2:00.00.
