Great conditions and a high level of competition combined with a season's worth of training helped Santa Clara produce excellent results this weekend at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational at Cal. The two day meet hosted by Cal featured collegiate athletes from all over the country and a slew of elite competitors and Olympians as well.

The Santa Clara men's 800m runners got the meet got started off on Friday evening with excellent performances. Junior Robbie Reid re-set his own school record by the smallest of margins, placing second in his heat with a time of 1:53.39, just one one hundreth faster than his previous best (1:53.40).

Freshman Guadalupe Gonzalez continued his outstanding freshman season re-setting his own freshman school record. Gonzalez ran 1:53.92 in only his third attempt at the distance.

Senior team captain John Laughlin had been struggling to find the form that he had last year, but not so this time. Laughlin took his heat out hard and held on for second in his heat and a huge seasonal best of 1:55.61.

Sophomore Richard Zhu set a personal best finishing 3rd in the same race, crossing the line in 1:56.09.

Only two Broncos competed on the second day of competition in the metric mile, Reid and red-shirt freshman Erin McCarthy. Both athletes came away with new personal bests and school records.

McCarthy, a Denver native ran first. McCarthy ran an aggressive race from the gun, leading for the first two laps of the 3 3/4 lap race. McCarthy ultimately finished 4th place in her race and lowered her personal best from 4:42.93 to 4:37.79. Her new time broke the record (4:39) that was set last season by Whitney Porter.

Reid, the WCC runner-up in cross country was in the fastest 1500m race of the day. Running even splits of approxmately 61 seconds per 400m, the junior from Mountain View crossed the line in 3:50.92, well below his previous school record of 3:54.16, set last year.

Both teams return to action again in two weeks at the Hornet Open in Sacramento.
