Track to Compete at Hornet Invitational

March 19, 2009

Santa Clara's track and field teams will participate in the Hornet Invitational, hosted by Sacramento State, on Sat., March 21. Bronco head coach Tom Service sees this meet as two-fold due to the fact that Santa Clara is just finishing up final exams on Friday.

"Although we expect our athletes to compete at anytime they step up to the line, this week serves more as a tune-up for next week's outstanding events: the Stanford Invitational and the San Francisco State Distance Carnival," said Service. "Final exams take a lot of out of our athletes so this is a good chance for them to re-focus their efforts on the track at a different distance."

Most of Santa Clara's 5K and 10K runners will be running middle distance races this weekend in preparation for their races next weekend.

"The kids love to run at Sacramento State because they have held the Olympic Trials two times in a row there and also have hosted the NCAA Outdoor Championships a number of times," added Service. "It will also be outstanding competition for our sprints crew as well because there will be a number of the really good sprinters there in the 100m and the 200m."

Service expects the competition at the Hornet Invitational to come from all over the country because a number of Midwest and Eastern colleges come out for a whole week on spring break to train and `go to Sac State this weekend and Stanford next week'.
