March 23, 2009

Santa Clara's track and field team competed at the Hornet Invitational on Sat., March 21 and set two school records along the way, one individually and one with a relay. In addition, it picked up a number of personal bests.

"Coach Montoro and I both felt this was a good tune-up for this next weekend's big meets at Stanford and the San Francisco State Distance Carnival," said SCU head coach Tom Service. "I am happy with our efforts at Sac State after a rough week of final exams."

Stephanie Wilson broke the school record in the 1500m, crossing the finish line at 4:40.39 to win the bronze medal. Whitney Porter was sixth at 4:42.76, moving up to No. 3 on the all-time list. Noelle Lopez was two places behind Porter in eighth place to move up to No. 5 on the all-time list at 4:43.47.

The women's 4x400m relay also broke the school record when it won its heat at 4:05.01. The ladies were paced by Kazmir Brown, Jackie Lynch, Jenny Light and Joanna Brown on the track with the baton.

"Jackie showed a lot of heart stepping in there and running with a tired hamstring," said Service. "Jenny Light had run a very good race in the 800m earlier in the day so the entire foursome showed a lot of heart."

Light ran a 2:20.98 to move to No. 2 all-time in the 800m all-time standings.

On the men's side Richard Zhu ran a personal best in the 800m. In addition, in the men's 3000m steeplechase Nhuguyen Le ran a personal best at 10:01.19 and Stephen Koch ran a season best in the race at 9:50.77. Robbie Reid finished in the top 10 of the 1500m, hitting the finish line at 4:01.66.
