Track to Run Amongst Olympians at Brutus Hamilton

Running with some of the world's best this weekend, Santa Clara will compete at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational at Cal on Fri., April 23 and Sat., April 24. The meet will feature eight Olympians, including former Oregon track star and 2008 Olympian Galen Rupp and 2008 Olympian Amy Begley.

"This has always been a great venue for the Broncos. Coupled with the New York Roadrunners Distance Carnival on Friday night, it includes so many top runners from around the West coast and the country," said Bronco head coach Tom Service. "It's one of the last true track-only stadiums in the nation."

The Bronco women's team will be feature sophomore Erin McCarthy, who will run the 800m on Friday and double-back in the 1500m on Saturday afternoon. This will be her first "clean" 800m this season as she has also run the 1500m earlier in the day at other meets. "The 800m was her strongest event when she was in high school," said Service.

On Saturday she will attempt to break the school record in the 1500m. The school record is 4:39.6 and she ran 4:42.93 as her personal best last weekend at Woody Wilson.

"She is gaining a lot of experience as she was injured last season outdoors. She is real healthy and really strong this season," added Service. The men's team will be highlighted by junior Robbie Reid and freshman Guadalupe Gonzalez.

Reid has the school record in the 800m and 1500m; and he will run both of those this weekend. "He is looking to improve on those records," said Bronco associate head coach Felipe Montoro.

Gonzalez is also running the 800m. He broke Reid's Santa Clara freshman record last weekend in the 800m. Reid set the 1500m record at this same meet three years ago

Other men running this weekend include senior captain John Laughlin (800m), freshman Matt Mosier (800m) and sophomore Richard Zhu (800m).
