Wilson Reflects on Standout Fall, Looking Forward to Track Season

Junior Stephanie Wilson made school history this past November by becoming Santa Clara's first NCAA Cross Country All-American. In addition to cross country, Wilson is also a member of the Bronco track team and is looking forward to a great spring season. Get to know Stephanie Wilson below.

SantaClaraBroncos.com: Has it finally sunk in that you're one of the select athletes in the country to be named an All-American?

Stephanie Wilson: Now, after winter break and everything, it has finally sunk in. I was still surprised for a really long time after I was named at the end of fall quarter. Now after the break, I'm finally starting to wrap my head around it. Everyone has been really supportive of me and really happy for me.

SCB.com: After having such a successful fall season with cross country, how do you prepare for the upcoming track season?

SW: For track, I'll be competing in the 5k and the 10k and I don't feel too much pressure; I know that as long as I keep doing what I've been doing, I'll be successful. All of the support has been really great, but since I didn't expect all of the post-season success, all of it has been an extra bonus that has made the experience even better.

SCB.com: Do you prepare any differently for the track season as opposed to cross country? Are there any particular aspects that you particularly like or dislike about the track season compared to cross country?

SW: Well since I'm running the 5k and the 10k the training will be very similar. The 10k will be a big challenge since I've never competed in that event before. I feel like the team becomes a lot closer during the track season since we travel together a lot more. Team chemistry-wise, everything clicks really well and we all have a great time with one another during the track season.

SCB.com: Who has been a key influence or mentor for you during the season?

SW: I picked up a lot of great habits and discipline from past teammates, especially last year's group of seniors. Tom Service has helped a lot, especially with getting me mentally prepared for each race. It's really been a group effort, everyone on my team, my family, Felipe Montoro, and my old soccer coach (and Professor of Communication here at SCU) Michael Whalen. I'm really lucky to have such wonderful support.

SCB.com: What are some of your favorite parts about being a SCU student-athlete?

SW: Our victory bus is really cool. People are really supportive here, especially the athletic department. I love being in the Bay area because there's a strong running community here. And of course our team is great; everyone has wonderful personalities and we get along really well. I think Santa Clara attracts really great runners and I'm happy to be here.
