LAKE NATOMA, Calif. – The Santa Clara men's rowing Novice 8 and Varsity 8 boats competed in their first race of the fall season at the Head of the American last Saturday, Oct. 25.

The Novice 8 boat surpassed 13 competing teams and won its race in the Collegiate Novice 8 event. The boat battled through intermittent rain and wind over the 5k race to finish with a time of 16:57.0, which beat the second-fastest boat by 01:46.0.

"Our coxswain Grace D'Amico did a great job of managing an unfamiliar course and the guys in the boat put together a very solid effort," said head coach Jay Farwell. "We have only been on the water for a few weeks and this boat really came together and really executed our race plan.  The guys were pleased with their effort but also realize that there is a tremendous amount of work to be done before our first spring race in early March."

In the Open 8 event, Santa Clara's young Varsity 8 team placed 6th out of 19 boats with a time of 17:43.0. Farwell said he was pleased with the team's efforts.

"This was a good result for this group of guys," Farwell said. "There was only one upperclassman in the lineup and the rest were all sophomores. Our program is very young but there is a tremendous amount of talent within the ranks. We also have a number of key guys who are nursing injuries and illness so we look forward to getting these guys back and creating a really competitive environment."

The team will race again at the Head of the Lagoon in Foster City on Nov. 8. For some of the novice rowers, it will be their first chance to compete this fall season.
