SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara men's rowing aims to continue its successful 2015 season as it competes in the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships at Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova, Calif. Saturday and Sunday. Heats will be held Saturday through the middle of the afternoon and finals will follow on Sunday.

The varsity 8, second varsity 8 and novice 8 boats all earned a seed in the top third of their respective fields — including a No. 1 seed for the novice 8 boat.

"The team has been preparing for this weekend's WIRA regatta and we are looking forward to racing a number of crews that we have already faced as well as a few who we will see for the first time," head coach Jay Farwell said. "The guys are ready and for the first time in a very long time, Santa Clara Rowing is very competitive in multiple events."

SANTA CLARA BOATS — SATURDAY HEAT TIMES

Novice 8 (No.1 Seed of 14 Crews) — Heat 1 of 2 — 11:40 a.m.

Opponents (Seed): UCI (4), UCSD (5), UCLA (8), SDSU (9), LBSU (12), ORE (13)

"Our freshmen/novice 8 received the No. 1 seed and deservedly so," Farwell said. "This group has had a very good year up to this point and expectations are high for them to uphold the No. 1 seeding. We know there are a number of crews looking to overtake them so they will have their work cut out for them."

Opponents: UCI (2), WSU (6), WWU (7), SDSU (10), UCD (11), SON (14)

"The varsity 8 received the No. 3 seed and will face some tough competition," Farwell said. "We have been changing the lineups around a bit and feel like we have a boat that has a good shot at winning the event."

"Receiving the No. 4 seed, the second varsity 8 will also have a great opportunity to line up against some crews that we saw earlier in the year," Farwell said.
