Solid Start and National Ranking Highlight Beginning Of Season
Plenty of enthusiasm and excitement was present during the Broncos' first third of the season. The program returned to the Div. I national team rankings for the first time since 2002 and accomplished a few firsts which included: beating a Pac-10 opponent (Arizona) on the road, defeating UC Irvine (also on the road) and recording two Pac-10 victories (over the Arizona Wildcats and Oregon Ducks). The team currently owns a five-match win streak, with four of their eight total wins against nationally ranked opponents. Santa Clara has played solid tennis and have their sights set on accomplishing much more before the WCC championships.

The Broncos completed their heavy travel with successful trips to San Diego, Southern California and Arizona, and returned to "their house" for a slew of home contests. Senior Bobby Rasmussen kicked off the home campaign with a thrilling comeback against Hawaii. Down 4-5, 0-40 in the third set, Bobby staved off three match points en route to clinching the Bronco victory. Later that weekend, Brian Brogan upended his opponent 6-7, 7-6, 1-0 (10-8 in superbreaker) in the team's 5-2 win over Oregon. And on President's Day, Jan Macek led Santa Clara to a resounding 6-1 victory over 2006 Big West champion UC Santa Barbara. Trailing 1-5 in the first set tiebreak, Jan rattled off six straight points to steal the breaker . Then down 0-3 in the second, he clawed his way back and eventually broke down Gaucho Bijan Hejazi for a 7-6, 7-5 victory.

Individual highlights included freshman Jay Wong's 21-6 singles record thus far in the season, junior Blane Shields undefeated play in singles and the red hot doubles tandem of Macek/Rasmussen. There's lots of tennis left and many more goals to reach. Roll on Broncos!

Look Who's Back
Rocky Balboa returned to the ring this past December and after a quarter of coaching and working out with the team, Jan Macek elected to rejoin his teammates for a final season. An all-WCC singles and doubles honoree in 2006, Macek graduated last June with a year of eligibility left under his belt. Following many hours contemplating his future, Jan decided that SCU business school was next on his list of goals and why not compete while pursuing his MBA?

When announcing his return to the team Macek said, "I found my bandana and jersey in the closet last night and then saw the commercial for Rocky. That was enough to make my decision." Jan's return has made a big impact to the Bronco squad as they take aim on some high goals this year.

Alumni Reunion & Bronco Pro-Am
Join the men's program this spring for two fun events: the 2nd annual SCU Men's Tennis Alumni Reunion & the 10th annual Bronco Pro-Am Invitational.

The Reunion is scheduled for Saturday, March 31 at 1pm and features a pre-match bbq before the Broncos battle Ivy League power Harvard.

The Pro-Am will be held on Saturday, April 28 at 2pm. The round-robin doubles event will pair current and former players with Bronco friends and family. Sophomore Kenzo Hirakawa-Wong and former SCU women's volleyball coach Annie Feller captured the championship title last spring. Both events serve as fundraisers for the men's program and their upcoming summer recruiting efforts. Contact the men's tennis office for more details and see you there!

Junior Sectionals To Santa Clara
