WCCs In Review
The Santa Clara men's tennis team earned the No. 2 seed for the West Coast Conference Championships after finishing the regular season with a 19-6 record. At the WCCs, the Broncos defeated Loyola Marymount 4-1 in the first round to advance to the semifinals of the tournament in a match that took two days to complete due to rain. Brian Brogan, Robert Gallman, Blane Shields and Tommy Hicks all picked up wins for Santa Clara. In the semifinals, SCU fell to the hosts 4-1 with San Diego winning the doubles point and three out of four singles matches. Shields got the lone win for the Broncos in singles. On April 22, the Broncos took on Saint Mary's in the third place match. After winning doubles, the Broncos lost four out of five singles matches to lose 4-2. Brogan and Jay Wong and Gallman and Shields won in doubles, while Shields won his third singles match of the weekend in the loss. Santa Clara finished the season with a 20-8 record.

Notes

All-WCC
Six Santa Clara University men's tennis players picked up All-West Coast Conference honors in 2007. Seniors Jan Macek and Bobby Rasmussen were joined on the All-WCC singles second team by freshman Jay Wong. Sophomore Brian Brogan and junior Blane Shields both earned All-WCC honorable mention status in singles as well. In doubles, the Broncos had all three doubles teams receive recognition. Macek and Rasmussen, who played No. 1, were selected as second team honorees, while the pairs of No. 3 Brogan and Wong and No. 2 junior Robert Gallman and Shields both were named honorable mention selections. SCU had never had more than three singles players or two doubles pairs earn All-WCC honors in one season. The Broncos had the most honorees of any school in the conference.

Seniors
Seniors Jan Macek and Bobby Rasmussen made Senior Day a memorable one on April 15 as the doubles pair was reunited for the final home match of the year. The pair had not played together in the previous five matches due to Rasmussen's broken hand. The pair showed no rust as they battled for an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles that clinched the all-important doubles point for SCU. Macek and Rasmussen finished the year 17-6 in doubles together.

Broncos In the Polls
The Broncos spent 12 weeks in the national rankings in 2007, setting a program record for most weeks spent in the rankings. In 2002, the team spent nine weeks in the rankings. Santa Clara reached as high as 59 this season, four spots behind the all-time record of 55. The team's final ranking was 73rd.

Wong Finishes Tied For First
Freshman Jay Wong had a memorable first season on the Mission Campus, posting a 30-11 record over the spring and fall seasons and an 18-8 dual match record. His 30 wins tied Francisco Zepponi for the most wins all-time in school history. Zepponi went 30-8 in 2002 to set the record. Wong played No. 2 and No. 3 singles for SCU.

Winning Streaks
The Bronco team had a number of memorable win streaks during the 2007 season.
-As a team, SCU posted a nine-match winning streak from Feb. 10-March 11. That streak was just behind the program's all-time winning streak of 12 matches in a row. On the road, the Broncos won four in a row from Feb. 10-March 11.
Individually, the Broncos had a number of players post big win streaks as well.
-Senior Bobby Rasmussen had two long winning streaks in singles, winning seven straight in the fall and spring from Oct. 21-Jan. 20. Then in the dual season, he won nine straight matches from Feb. 14-March 27 before breaking his hand on the eve of the team's match against Harvard. He lost his first match back from the injury in the WCC semifinals against San Diego.
-Sophomore Tommy Hicks started the dual season 0-5, but a six-match winning streak from Feb. 16-March 7 turned his season around. He finished the dual season with an 11-8 record after that slow start.
-Junior Blane Shields had a breakout year in singles. After going 7-3 in the fall, he exploded for a 15-2 mark in the dual season. He won his first eight dual matches from Feb. 4-March 27 before losing. He then finished the year with five wins in a row, including three wins at the WCC Championships.
-Freshman Jay Wong had an unbelievable first season for SCU, winning 30 matches. He also posted a nine-match winning streak from Feb.4-March 7 and a six-match winning streak from March 31-April 15.
-In doubles the Broncos also had two pairs that put together great streaks. Seniors Jan Macek and Bobby Rasmussen won seven straight matches from Feb. 4-19. Juniors Robert Gallman and Blane Shields won their first six matches together from March 2-27. They finished the year 10-3 together.

Big Wins
The men's tennis team posted 13 wins in 2007 against teams that were ranked in the national polls at some point in 2007. The Broncos defeated UC Irvine, Arizona, Hawaii, Oregon, UCSB, Portland, Saint Mary's, Cal Poly, BYU, Harvard, Sacramento State and USF twice. All of those teams spent time in the national rankings in 2007.

Doubles Point
The doubles point was huge for George Husack's team in 2007. The Broncos were 19-1 when winning the doubles point and 0-7 when losing the doubles point.

20 Wins To Tie Record
The Broncos tied the all-time program record for wins with their 4-1 victory over Loyola Marymount on April 21. The team finished the season with a 20-8 record and a program-best .714 winning percentage. Cliff Barrett's Bronco team finished the 1986 season with a 20-10 record.

Big Winners
Five Broncos players finished with at least 18 wins in 2007. Jay Wong reached 30, while Blane Shields put up 22 victories. Sophomores Tommy Hicks and Brian Brogan both came up just short of 20 wins with 19 apiece. Senior Bobby Rasmussen finished the year with 18 wins, but missed seven matches with a broken hand.

Junior Blane Shields led the Broncos in match-clinching victories in 2007 with six.

Doubles Duo
The Broncos No. 2 doubles tandem of Robert Gallman and Blane Shields played together for the first time on March, an 8-5 win against Portland. They won their first six matches together and proved to be key for SCU down the stretch, posting a 10-3 record together on the season.

Macek/Rasmussen and McQuaid/Shields In The Record Books
The doubles teams of Jan Macek/Bobby Rasmussen and Kevin McQuaid/Blane Shields moved up the record books in career doubles victories this past season. McQuaid and Shields won a school record 20 matches in 2005-06 to move to No. 4 all-time in doubles wins. The pair won six matches in 2006-07 and is now in sole possession of third all-time with 26 wins. Macek and Rasmussen started the 2006-07 season with 18 career wins together posted a 17-6 record to move into sole possession of second place all-time with 35 wins. An injury to Rasmussen forced him to miss seven matches with Macek. The pair finished 12 wins behind the all-time leaders, Marcell Hlousek and Jeremy Testwuide, who won 47 matches together at SCU from 1997-99. For a single season, Macek and Rasmussen tied for fourth all-time with 17 wins, just three short of McQuaid and Shields' record.

Macek/Rasmussen Both In Top-10 In Combined Doubles
Seniors Jan Macek and Bobby Rasmussen left their mark on the all-time doubles record book this season. Macek ended his career with 53 doubles wins, while Rasmussen had 52 for his career. Macek is now ninth in doubles wins and Rasmussen is 10th. Taylor Bedilion '05 is next on the list with 56 doubles wins.

Rasmussen Into Top-10 In Singles
Senior Bobby Rasmussen had an excellent spring season in singles, posting a 15-6 record to move his career singles record to 60-50. He finished his career tied with Federico Mattioli for sixth all-time in singles wins at SCU. The senior lost his first five matches in the fall, but he went 18-6 after that to finish the year 18-11. He missed seven matches with a broken hand.

Shields Dominant In Singles
Junior Blane Shields had been a solid player for SCU in 2005 and 2006, but he had a breakout season in 2007, posting a 15-2 dual match record and clinching six matches for the Broncos. Overall, he finished the year 22-5, tying him with Federico Mattioli for the seventh most wins in a single season. He won his first eight dual singles matches for the Broncos and also was the only Bronco to win three times at the WCC Championships.

Macek, Rasmussen and Gallman Lead Way In Doubles
Senior Jan Macek and Bobby Rasmussen, along with Robert Gallman were the top doubles players in 2007 for SCU. Macek led the team with a 21-8 record while playing with three different partners. Rasmussen was close behind with a 20-9 record, and Gallman had an 18-9 mark for SCU.

Bronco Firsts
The Santa Clara men's tennis team achieved a number of notable firsts this season on the courts. The team defeated UC Irvine for the first time in program history on Feb. 4, earning a 6-1 win. The team's win over the University of Arizona on Feb. 10 contained a pair of firsts. The Broncos had never beaten Arizona in the past and they had not beaten a Pac-10 team on the road. However, SCU accomplished both tasks with its 4-3 victory. The Broncos achieved another first in on March 11, defeating Cal Poly on the road for the first time in school history. SCU also entered the WCC Championships as the No. 2 seed for the first time in program history since the team format was adopted by the West Coast Conference.

Ranked Foes
SCU played 12 ranked opponents in 2007, Boise State (25), California (18), Pepperdine (9), UC Irvine (74), Arizona State (57), Arizona (72), Hawai'i (73), Oregon (75), Saint Mary's (72), Cornell (75), BYU (69) and Stanford (60). Those rankings were at the time of the match. The Broncos played only 10 ranked opponents in 2006.
