Palo Alto, Calif. - George Husack's men's tennis squad continued play on Saturday at the ITA Northwest Regionals on the campus of Stanford University. Overall, the Broncos posted 11 singles wins and a doubles win. Kevin McQuaid and Blane Shields won their doubles match, while the team won 12 out of 17 matches on the day. The team showed great resilience throughout the day as the players went undefeated in tiebreakers with a perfect 6-0 record.
In the main draw for singles on Saturday, Jay Wong knocked off the 15th seeded Gabriel Laredo in the Round of 32 2-6; 6-4; 7-5 to advance to the Round of 16. In the Round of 16, Wong's impressive run ended as he fell to the No. 2 seed Pierre Mouillon of California. Sophomore Brian Brogan lost in the Round of 32 in three sets to Cal's Ken Nakahara.
In doubles, McQuaid and Shields moved on with an 8-3 win over Oregon's Hugh McDonald and Vladamir Pino. They will next face the second-seeded pair of Pierre Mouillon and Daniel Sebescen of California at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday. The other doubles teams of Brian Brogan and Jay Wong and Kenzo Hirakawa-Wong and Aneal Vallurupalli were eliminated in tight matches in the Round of 32.
