Men's Water Polo Excited To Begin Summer Practice

June 3, 2009

The Santa Clara men's water polo team finished the spring season banged up, but ready to start the summer season.

The spring season went well for the Broncos, but they were hampered by injuries, and lost five players to graduation. "Overall the spring season went well," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "Even though we had low numbers we were able to focus on the players out there."

In addition, the Broncos spent the offseason, focusing on a new weight routine. "We had a new regiment this offseason, including a new weight program, and we had great results, said redshirt junior All-American Jack Wall.

Along with the much improved offseason workouts the men's water polo team is excited for what the summer season holds. This will be the first summer in which the Broncos can practice in the 50-meter Sullivan Aquatic Center pool, and junior Liam Farrell is excited.

"I am looking forward to playing in the new pool this summer, and not having to drive to play at another pool."

The summer will also be a great opportunity to play other collegiate competition. "The summer will be important for us to have continued development of our guys," said Wilbur. "We are playing a lot of tournaments this summer against strong competition, and those are games we are really looking forward to."

The Broncos will host tournaments on June 27th and August 8th. They will travel to the University of the Pacific on July 11th, and on July 18th they will play at Loyola Marymount.

With the fall season only a few months away the Broncos cannot help but be excited for the future. "We have a good core of guys coming back next year, and the attitude of the team is right to have a lot of success next year," said Wilbur.

"The team is going to look a lot different than last year's squad and it will be interesting to see how we play in the summer," said Farrell. "But it will be exciting next year to match up with top programs in the country."
