No. 13 Santa Clara Drops WWPA Semi To LMU 12-7

ORANGE, Calif. - The No. 13 Santa Clara men's water polo team fell to eighth-ranked Loyola Marymount, 12-7, today in the WWPA semifinals.

The first quarter featured a tight contest. The Lions scored 44 seconds into the contest, but junior Mitch Klipa answered for the Broncos. LMU scored at the six minute mark, but again Santa Clara answered with a goal by sophomore James Case. The Lions then took a 4-2 lead, but senior Jack Wall cut the lead to one with a goal at the 1:58 mark.

LMU took control of the game in the second quarter, scoring three straight to go up 7-3. Wall was able to reduce the lead to three with 43 seconds to go in the half.

In the third quarter, the Lions established a five-goal lead, scoring three goals to take a 10-5 lead into the fourth quarter. Senior Mike Sorgenfrei got the only tally for the Broncos in the period.

Santa Clara was only able to score two goals in the final quarter, getting goals from Case and Sorgenfrei, and LMU matched that total, going on to win the contest 12-7.

The Broncos will finish out the 2009 season tomorrow at 12:30 p.m., playing the loser of today's UC San Diego-Whittier match.
