Ten Men's Water Polo Players Earn ACWPC All-Academic Accolades

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Ten Santa Clara men's water polo players were honored by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches on the ACWPC All-Academic teams for their achievements during the 2009 season.

The All-Academic awards are divided into three categories, Outstanding (4.00-3.71 GPA), Superior (3.70-3.41 GPA) and Excellent (3.40-3.20 GPA). The Broncos placed one on the Outstanding list, six as Superior, and three as Excellent.

Junior Stephen Hobbs was the only SCU athlete to earn Outstanding honors. Hobbs was a key substitute for the Broncos at the two-meter position, scoring 25 goals and four assists. He led the team in five-meter shots drawn and was also third on the team in ejections drawn with 29.

Designated as Superior was freshman Jack Penner, redshirt junior Mark Soares, sophomore Michael Wishart, junior Mitch Klipa, sophomore Brett Zylstra, and senior Liam Farrell.

Penner was one of two freshmen to see regular time in the pool and finished with nine goals and 17 assists. Soares played in all 34 games and had 18 goals and two assists. Wishart started all 34 games in the cage saving 53 percent of the shots-on-goal he faced while adding 34 steals and 19 assists. Klipa was third on the team in steals with 26, scoring 22 goals and 19 assists. Zylstra played in half of the games this year, scoring four goals and five assists. Farrell was third on the team in goals with 48 and fourth in assists with 39.

Junior Josh Luebke, freshman John Nash, and senior Mike Sorgenfrei were classified as Excellent. Luebke played in 28 games, scoring seven goals and eight assists. Nash served as the backup goalie to Wishart, saving 56% of the shots on goal and adding eight steals and four assists. Sorgenfrei started every game and was third in assists with 42, scored 21 goals, while adding 25 steals and 23 kickouts drawn.
