SCU-Chapman Final Stats

ORANGE, Calif. - The No. 14 Santa Clara men's water polo team closed out the weekend with two wins against WWPA opponents Chapman and Whittier.

In the morning game against Chapman, the Bronco offense exploded for 18 goals while the Panthers only managed five. Poggetti had five goals, two in both the first and second quarters and added one more in the third. Sophomore goalie Michael Wishart had eight blocks in the cage.

Santa Clara had a 5-3 lead at the end of the first, and scored five unanswered goals in the second to build up a seven-goal lead by halftime. The Panthers final goal came with eight seconds left in the game as the Broncos rolled to victory.

Junior Josh Luebke had four steals in the contest while sophomore Daley Meistrell added three assists.

Against Whittier, the game was much tighter. Santa Clara had a one-goal lead at half (6-5), but another solid performance by Poggetti, who has his second five-goal performance of the day, helped anchor the Broncos' 15-11 victory.

"We had a couple of tough losses this weekened, so I was really happy that the guys finished strong," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "We played hard and with a lot of energy and I really think that shows on the scoresheet."

Sophomore James Case had four assists, while senior Mike Sorgenfrei, Meistrell, and senior Liam Farrell had three assists. Wishart had nine saves. Juniors Stephen Hobbs and Mitch Klipa each drew two exclusions.
